He has not cleaned his clarinet since, and found abundant and lush fungi (outer flask mold, a kind of fungus in decayed wood and soil) in his instruments and reeds.

Wind instruments are more likely to breed bacteria than other instruments, especially woodwind instruments, where microorganisms prefer to "settle home".
