In sewage treatment, filtration is a physical method. Filtration mainly purifies water quality from the following three aspects:

1. Resistance to intercept the granular filter material layer has the effect of interception, and the large suspended particles will first be intercepted in the gaps of the surface filter material. The continuous retention of large particles makes the gap between this layer of filter material smaller and smaller, and the retention capacity is getting stronger and stronger. Particles with smaller particle diameters are more likely to be retained.

2. The surface of many gravity-settled filter materials provides a larger settlement area. When the sewage passes through the filter layer, the suspended matter in the sewage settles on the surface of the filter material. The gravity settlement strength is mainly related to the diameter of the filter material and the filter speed. The smaller the filter material, the larger the sedimentation area; the lower the filter speed, the more stable the water flow, which is conducive to the sedimentation of suspended materials.

3. Contact flocculation because of the large surface area of the filter material, has a significant physical adsorption effect with suspended solids.
